Registering Trauma
You’ve been through something hard, maybe one overwhelming event, maybe years of pressure that piled up. And even though it’s over, your mind and body still act like it isn’t.
It might show up as anxiety that won’t quiet down, feeling on edge for no clear reason, or sudden waves of panic that hit out of nowhere. It can look like intrusive thoughts and worst-case scenarios you can’t reason your way out of, or shutting down when you most need to be present.
Understanding your trauma doesn’t make the symptoms stop. Smart, capable people try to out-think it every day, but trauma isn’t only psychological. It lives in the body, too. When an experience isn’t fully processed, it stays stored in your nervous system, not just your memory, and your brain keeps sounding the alarm because it hasn’t registered that you’re safe.
Real healing isn’t about trying harder, analyzing more, or pushing through on willpower. It’s about focused work that helps your nervous system finally register that the danger has passed.
What therapy helps with
Constant vigilance, scanning conversations and schedules for mistakes, with a steady hum of dread
Panic that hits without warning, with a racing heart, tight chest, or dizziness that leaves you bracing for the next one
Intrusive thoughts and mental checking that won’t let up (if this sounds familiar, see OCD & Anxiety Loops)
Past events like accidents, medical crises, or sudden losses that still set off a physical reaction
Growing up where feeling safe meant being perfect, self-reliant, or responsible for everyone
Looking composed and successful on the outside while running on adrenaline and running low
Avoidance that quietly shrinks your routines, places, or career steps to keep distress at bay

Therapy for Trauma, Panic & Intrusive Loops

No. A common fear is that therapy means talking through every painful detail until you feel completely flooded. EMDR doesn’t work that way, and we never drop you into overwhelming memories without preparation. First, we build grounding techniques that help your body and nervous system settle when distress comes up. When we begin reprocessing, using bilateral stimulation (like guided eye movements or gentle tapping), you observe the memory from a place of safety, with one foot firmly in the present while your brain processes the old event. You stay in control of the pace the whole time.

Because panic and intrusive thoughts don’t start in the logical, reasoning part of your brain. They come from its survival centers. When a hard event or long stretch of stress hasn’t been fully processed, your nervous system stays set to emergency mode. Trying to reason your way out of an intrusive loop or a wave of panic is like arguing with a smoke detector while it’s going off. Through ERP, CBT, and EMDR, we work with both the alarm itself and the mental checking that keeps it going, so your system learns to stop reacting to false alarms.

Deeper therapy and lasting change take time, but relief often comes much sooner. Our first priority is calming the most intense distress, bringing panic spikes, middle-of-the-night waking, and physical tension down to a manageable level. Many clients notice they feel steadier and less physically on edge early on, once we begin EMDR or exposure work. This is focused, structured care with clear milestones along the way, designed to help you rely on yourself, not to keep you in therapy indefinitely.

That counts, too. Years of ongoing stress can affect you just as deeply as a single crisis. Growing up or working in environments that were critical, chaotic, or intensely perfectionistic teaches your body that staying on high alert is how you survive. Today it might show up as exhaustion at work, a constant fear of being found out, a steady sense of dread, or burnout you feel in your body. EMDR and depth psychotherapy are well suited to untangling these layered patterns, helping your nervous system finally recognize that the old conditions no longer run your life.

Not always. Many people get stuck in repetitive thoughts after trauma, during anxious periods, or under stress. With OCD, the loop follows a specific pattern: an unwanted thought creates distress, and a ritual follows to relieve it, like checking, seeking reassurance, or mentally reviewing. Over time, that ritual is what keeps the cycle going. Knowing which pattern you’re dealing with helps guide the right treatment. Learn more about OCD and anxiety loops.
